The Romans gave the town its name. The town is the arrival point which starts from Vico Equense and runs across the Lattari mountains. It was under the Borbone dynasty that the actual road was built which connects Castellammare to the Sorrento coast. It was on this road that a temple dedicated to Minerva was built, but later it was substiuted by an Early Christian church. During the 1700’s a basilica was built dedicated to the town’s patron saint – The Madonna del Lauro. At Christmas in the Basilica della Madonna del Lauro you may visit one of the most beautiful manger scenes. If you want to savour an atmosphere of the past, stroll down into the historical centre of the town; historical biuldings, squares and gardens bring back the memories of times which no longer exist, when time passed slowly. From the month of May, the beautiful Marina di Alimuri may be visited.
